This has been an inspiring context for the discussions and analyses presented in this book.
The book elucidates a variety of understandings related to the concept of convergence, and at the same time reflects on the analytical advantage of the concept. The contributions discuss the impact of media digitalization and the degree to which the prospects of convergence have been realized. The studies range from investigations of institutional and regulatory change within media and cultural institutions, to analyses of communicative genres and social practices related to digital media.Note de contenu : Contents

Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada.
The book looks at the coverage of the cartoons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media’s relations to immigration policy, and issues of integration.
Through this approach, the book aims at a nuanced understanding of the cartoon controversy itself as well as at more general insights into the role of the media in contemporary transnational and transcultural relations.

Over the years, we have focused attention on a wide range of topics, but this is the first Yearbook with a geographical focus, and a vast continent at that. A focus on Africa seems both timely and important. When issues about children and media are discussed, all too often the frame of reference is the media culture of the Western world. There is an urgent need for the agenda to become open to non-Western thoughts and intercultural approaches to a much higher degree than is the case at present.
The essays in this volume reflect a wide-range of issues and concerns related to children’s media culture in Africa. For example, several address the role of entertainment television in Addis Abba, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Zambia and in the lives of Muslim children. Other essays introduce us to children-centered media from Ghana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and the innovative programs of PLAN-International. In addition to entertainment media and children-centered media, media education and digital media literacy are also discussed.African media, african children [texte imprimé] / Norma Pecora, Metteur en scène, réalisateur . - Göteborg (Suède) : Nordicom, 2008 . - 1 vol.

Résumé : The transformation of the traditional soap opera into certain more extreme soaps, and the emergence of the recent ‘global’ reality TV formats have whipped up storms of controversy in a great number of countries. Such programmes have also generated worries among adults about how they are received by, and may influence, young viewers – because children from all over the world watch adult programming from an early age. Since research on young people and these fictional genres seriously lags behind, the primary aim of the Yearbook is to stimulate further research on the subject. In order to do so, the Clearinghouse invited scholars from all over the world to contribute their knowledge so far. Thus at the same time, the book gives answers to at least some of the questions on young people, soap operas and reality TV in the public debate. Education par les médias:Société:MigrationsMots-clés : activisme éducation citoyenne citoyenneté politique web 2.0 Index. décimale : 47 Internet Résumé : The rhetoric on the Internet and its potential implications for the sphere of politics have been especially pertinent in regard to young people. Through the use of notions such as "the e-generation" or "the messenger generation", the new ICT's supposed transformative potential has been identified and discussed. Just based on the title of this book, it might seem as if we are offering a similar approach here -- speculative reflections on the significance of the Internet for young people's engagement and participation.
However, the reader expecting discussions on how the various generations of the Web have turned the political and democratic world upside down will be disappointed. What this book offers instead are theoretical reflections on the Internet's civic potential: analyses of policy concerns connected to its development, and elusive case studies of civic websites as well as young people's everyday Web practices. Basically, the chapters in this book seek to analyze rather than mythologize the Internet's political implications for young people.Pays : Suède Niveau : Supérieur et universitaire Young people, ICT's and democracy [texte imprimé] / Tobias Olsonn, Editeur scientifique ; Peter Dahlgren, Editeur scientifique . - Göteborg (Suède) : Nordicom, 2010 . - 1 vol. Media are - either actively or passively - actors in the resultant propaganda war and can as such influence public opinion. Globalization processes imply transnational mediated flows of meaning at the same time as the perceived meanings vary between cultures and countries. That media divide globally in the coverage of the War on Terror is not only obvious when comparing American and Arab media, but also between the U.S. and Western European media. This has partly to do with the difficult demands on journalists and media as to how to manage the flood of propaganda and the threats to professional integrity and standards. How images of the U.S. and the Others are portrayed by media in various countries after September 11 and the attack on Afghanistan is at the focus of this volume. The concept of ‘media literacy’ has been given a great many definitions worldwide, something that is touched upon in the booklet. What we have in view here is knowledge of children and media, and efforts made to realise children’s rights in this respect, not least their right to influence and participate in the media. The yearbook contains a review of recent and current international trends in media literacy including research on children and media – that is, summarising examples of/references to research and practices, important conferences and declarations related to the area, and a selection of relevant organisations and web sites.

Risks travel physically as well as discursively between continents, countries and cultures. Globalization itself has actualized new alleged risks in politics, media and public debates. Globalization and conflicts have become major issues. The growth of xenophobia and populism of various kinds has lead to dramatic changes in geographical and mental maps. In what direction globalization will take us depends on how the media portray the possibilities and problems associated with it. This volume is a contribution to these discussions, particularly with respect to the theme of media representations of identity conflicts connected to imagined dangers and risks in late modernity. It provides analytical tools for improved understanding of the multifaceted ways in which communication about different kinds of threats relates to social and cultural integration and hence has consequences for trust and legitimacy in society. One major focus is on the media’s role and the consequences of mediatized risk constructions as threats. But the authors also study risk rhetoric in various contexts, threat and risk communication within organizational settings, management decisions in media companies when a mega-news item breaks, citizens’ use of and expectations regarding mobile emergency call techniques or how communication systems for incident reports cause internal identity and competence conflicts. The authors are leading researchers in the field of mediated risk communication and rhetoric in the Nordic countries. The theme echoes some of the claims made by disenchanted and frustrated youth and other citizens in the streets of North Africa’s cities in 2011 and 2012. They were severely critical of the governance structures in their countries, mass social mobilizations took place, governments fell and, in the aftermath, the slow process of transition continued, now with one tyrant less but still with uncertain outcomes and huge challenges for the social and economic development of these countries.
Youth in particular engaged massively, visibly, loudly and dramatically around demands to be involved and included in their countries’ development processes. This yearbook taps into the less visible and dramatic, but nevertheless highly dynamic and influential, process of media development and the enlargement of youth-driven, deliberative spaces which sub-Saharan Africa is currently experiencing.Note de contenu : Part I. Or should it rather be understood as a culture in which various forms of user participation in fact are conditioned, or even manufactured, by organized, professional producers?
Considering the increasing research attention that has been paid recently to various notions of mediated participation, most often with reference to social networking media or “web 2.0”, questions such as these are important to ask. They call attention to the need to both critically discuss and investigate the supposedly transformative potential of emerging media culture, which is based to a great extent on the applications that we have learnt to refer to as “social” media.
The contributions to this book, thirteen chapters from international scholars, add to our critical understanding of these new forms of media. They all draw on various theoretical concepts – such as producers, community, and participation – used when analysing media culture. But they also share a critical interest in problematizing and analysing the forms of power built into this culture.Note de contenu : Introduction

Note de contenu : The Yearbook 2009 focuses on youth as a generation of actors and citizens who are increasingly exposed to and making use of media/ICT for entertainment and informational purposes, for social networking and mobilization, and for knowledge sharing.
At the core of this creativity and these innovative practices is media and information literacy. Young people’s competence in using media, their ability to produce, understand and interact with the multiplicity of both new and old media formats and technologies have been instrumental in the manifestation of social processes of change. This book seeks to explore theoretical assumptions as well as empirical evidence of media and information literacy in action. But it also gathers examples of how youth in developing countries have used their skills to bring about change.

This book introduces the Interview Society as an innovative, provocative and challenging concept to understand the construction of news, the use of language, and the power of journalism in contemporary media society. It focuses on the journalistic interview and on the techniques for the representation of utterances, talk and conversation, and combines theories of the public sphere, news journalism, and the interview as a form of interaction. It relates discursive techniques on a micro level to institutional and cultural conditions on a macro level, with regard to journalism and the media public sphere, and takes a historically point of departure with the intention of pinning down important tendencies in the development of modern journalism during the 20th century. Without being nation-specific, it presents findings from a number of empirical studies from five different countries and various genres. The book is structured in relation to four main themes: (1) Historical perspectives, (2) Practices of interviewing and institutionalised interaction, (3) Quoting and editing, (4) New arenas and new forms of interaction. This volume presents the results of the work the Clearinghouse has done in response to that request. Violence is no longer an adequate heading; today, terms like “harmful media content” or “harm and offence in media content” are more in keeping with the situation. It is this broader term that forms our point of departure in this work. In the book, a good number of scholars and other experts, with an eye to the future, present conclusions that can be drawn from the research to date on offensive and potentially harmful media content and the protection of minors. They do so from a variety of perspectives and with most valuable reflections. The Clearinghouse also presents different kinds of efforts at raising media and information literacy through examples of activities, projects and resources from many different parts of the world. Education aux médias:Ouvrages généraux sur la communication et l'audiovisuel:CommunicationMots-clés : démocratie politique sphère publique Index. décimale : 12 Audiovisuel et médias Résumé : This book brings together leading European specialists in theories of the public sphere, media and democracy. It explores current key problems of communication, democracy and diversity, and how these are intertwined as part of media practice. Integrating geographical, historical and multicultural approaches, it develops existing thought on public sphere and democracy. In particular, it focuses on three dimensions that reflect obstacles to the European democratic project.
In exploring the reality and content of the concept of a European public sphere, the book scrutinizes the concept's inherent values and norms as well as the nature of the formation and structure of a transnational public sphere: its efficacy, legitimacy, and pluralism.
Examining media practices, journalistic cultures and the mediation of European issues in member states, it explores how the European public sphere(s) are actualized for its citizens. Opening up the ethnic, cultural, and historical diversity of the continent, the book offers new approaches to the demands of modern European multiculturalism.
In each case, the apparent struggle between idealism and realism forces the authors to question, as well as to offer, new ways of understanding the integration process and its communicative edge.Note de contenu : Inka Salovaara-Moring: Manufacturing Europe, Restoring Communication?, I.

The first part of the contains articles by eminent scholars active on different continents. These articles exhibit theoretical visions and empirical examples of what constitutes - and what does not constitute - media and media contents in the service of children and youth. The researchers also reflect on measures for improving young people's media situation in the digital age. Many of the research findings would appear to be conflicting. There are, moreover, different types of media violence and different types of influences. In this document, Cecilia von Feilitzen, Scientific Co-ordinator at Nordicom’s International Clearinghouse on Children and Violence on the Screen, has attempted to collect and classify research findings into a more concise form than is perhaps common when reporting on research. Because of its powers of penetration, television still has a unique position as an advertising medium, but advertising directed to youthful viewers is more and more prevalent on the Internet and mobile phones, as well. The rapid pace of change in our societies regarding media technology, information processing, economy and consumption patterns are challenges for children and adolescents, while these changes often seem to be a threat to the older generation. The aim of the yearbook 2007 is to shed light on these new trends and global developments in relation to young people, consumption and media. Note de contenu : Contents

Globally, enhancing media literacy is related to aspects of Human Rights, especially to the Rights of the Child. During recent years, there have been important policy efforts for developing media literacy education around the world.
This publication belongs to an effort bringing the Nordic studies on media literacy education in a global sight. Current definitions of media literacy and evaluations of educational case studies are presented in the form of thirteen articles written by Nordic academic experts. The articles present, for example, discussions on media literacies in a historical and cultural context and the construction of media literacy as a civic competence. Moreover, texts on educational case studies discuss instructional issues but deal with classroom research and curricular issues as well.

Media and politics are thus inextricable linked together, with the media playing an important role in contemporary democracies and for political processes. While this is true for virtually all advanced democracies, there are still important differences between countries depending on, for example, their media systems and political systems. The purpose of Communicating Politics: Political Communication in the Nordic Countries is consequently to de-scribe and analyze both the political communication systems and cases of political communication processes in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Taken together, the chapters explore differences as well as similarities between the Nordic countries, and provide a broad view of political communication systems, practices and research perspectives in the Nordic countries. An interactive and mobile media society has grown up alongside the traditional mass media society. Passive media consumers are becoming active media producers. In the midst of these developments are children and youth. Many parents, teachers and policy-makers are concerned about the negative influence they believe media exert on young people. The media, however, are also valued as social and cultural resources. It is in this complex context that we must see the importance of media literacy and media education. But when issues such as these are discussed, all too often the frame of reference is the media culture of the Western world. There is an urgent need for the agenda to become open to non-Western thoughts and intercultural approaches.
This book is based on international conferences on media education in Riyadh and Paris 2007. Scholars and other experts present conclusions from experiences and research to date on media education from a variety of perspectives and different cultures.Note de contenu : Acknowledgemant

Education aux médias:Nouvelles technologies de l'information et de la communication:InternetMots-clés : protection de l'enfance sur internet Index. décimale : 47 Internet Résumé : Keeping children safe online has been the subject of intensive policy debate ever since the mid-1990s when the internet first became an important public communications medium. The European Union has been to the fore in promoting internet safety and through its Safer Internet Programme has supported multistakeholder initiatives with industry, law enforcement, education and civil society to create a safer internet environment. Now, with a new emphasis on not just a safer but also a better internet, policy makers have signalled a new phase in strategies to protect children online. Reviewing the development of internet safety policy over this period – against the background of better evidence about the reality of young people’s experiences and looking to its future are among the key themes of this book.
Contributors, all members of the now 33-country EU Kids Online network, seek to add to a growing literature on policy matters regarding internet regulation and governance as the Internet enters a new phase of maturity with near universal access and use. European in scope but international in outlook, the chapters in this collection seek to raise critical debate on just how mainstream are policies to protect young people, promote their best interests online and empower them to avail of the full range of digital opportunities? Against a background of increased international tension and debate over whether the internet should be regulated at all, contributors adopt a somewhat different position and assess the forms, contexts and evidence in favour of action – regulatory and otherwise – needed to support safer and better outcomes for young people.

One might say that we also help to bring order to a complex subject area, where many diverse views and interests converge and consensus in the research community is lacking. It is our hope that bringing together a disparate body of research findings and ideas about young people and the media will contribute to further knowledge in the field. Education aux médias:Ouvrages généraux sur la communication et l'audiovisuel:Audiovisuel et médiasMots-clés : livre anglais digital éducation aux médias Index. décimale : 12 Audiovisuel et médias Résumé : The topics addressed in the 2018 Yearbook – how to relate to or mediate children’s use of digital media, generational gaps in the use of media and the use of social media to display or seek support in parenthood – are timely and relevant in many respects and have engaged many qualified scholars from around the world. Parenting in the digital media environment is a theme often discussed in news media and among parenting groups. Balancing the opportunities of digital media and at the same time considering potentially unwanted and/or negative effects can be a challenge, both for adults and for the younger generation. There are no established policies, long traditions or experience to turn to and many are seeking advice. The 2018 Yearbook is the result of a great collaborative effort. Nordicom is deeply grateful to the editors of this new anthology, Giovanna Mascheroni, Cristina Ponte and Ana Jorge, as well as to all the contributors who have made this publication possible. It is our hope that the collection of articles will make interesting reading all around the world, stimulate new research and debate and provide new ideas regarding the topical and highly relevant issue of being a parent in the digital age. In the work of the Clearinghouse, the global dimension is a core principle, both with respect to the content we publish and distribute and to the contributors who produce it. Digital Parenting represents this principle by presenting contributions and examples and involving authors from many areas of the world. All books published by the Clearinghouse aim to shed light on different aspects concerning children, youth and media, spread current information and knowledge and hopefully stimulate further research. Various groups of users are targeted; researchers, policymakers, media professionals, voluntary organizations, teachers, students and in-terested individuals. It is our hope that this new Yearbook will be of interest and provide new insights on the topic of digital parenting to a broad range of readers. Note de contenu : Preface
