One might say that we also help to bring order to a complex subject area, where many diverse views and interests converge and consensus in the research community is lacking. It is our hope that bringing together a disparate body of research findings and ideas about young people and the media will contribute to further knowledge in the field. Education aux médias:Ouvrages généraux:Sociologie/InterculturalismeMots-clés : médias et enfance médias et jeunesse Index. décimale : 10 Communication Résumé : Although media, digital and information divides do exist in the world, more and more people have access to a steadily swelling flow of material through many new channels. An interactive and mobile media society has grown up alongside the traditional mass media society. Passive media consumers are becoming active media producers. In the midst of these developments are children and youth. Many parents, teachers and policy-makers are concerned about the negative influence they believe media exert on young people. The media, however, are also valued as social and cultural resources. It is in this complex context that we must see the importance of media literacy and media education. But when issues such as these are discussed, all too often the frame of reference is the media culture of the Western world. There is an urgent need for the agenda to become open to non-Western thoughts and intercultural approaches.
This book is based on international conferences on media education in Riyadh and Paris 2007. Scholars and other experts present conclusions from experiences and research to date on media education from a variety of perspectives and different cultures.Note de contenu : Acknowledgemant

This volume presents the results of the work the Clearinghouse has done in response to that request. Violence is no longer an adequate heading; today, terms like “harmful media content” or “harm and offence in media content” are more in keeping with the situation. It is this broader term that forms our point of departure in this work. In the book, a good number of scholars and other experts, with an eye to the future, present conclusions that can be drawn from the research to date on offensive and potentially harmful media content and the protection of minors. They do so from a variety of perspectives and with most valuable reflections. The Clearinghouse also presents different kinds of efforts at raising media and information literacy through examples of activities, projects and resources from many different parts of the world. The theme echoes some of the claims made by disenchanted and frustrated youth and other citizens in the streets of North Africa’s cities in 2011 and 2012. They were severely critical of the governance structures in their countries, mass social mobilizations took place, governments fell and, in the aftermath, the slow process of transition continued, now with one tyrant less but still with uncertain outcomes and huge challenges for the social and economic development of these countries.
Youth in particular engaged massively, visibly, loudly and dramatically around demands to be involved and included in their countries’ development processes. This yearbook taps into the less visible and dramatic, but nevertheless highly dynamic and influential, process of media development and the enlargement of youth-driven, deliberative spaces which sub-Saharan Africa is currently experiencing.Note de contenu : Part I. Note de contenu : The Yearbook 2009 focuses on youth as a generation of actors and citizens who are increasingly exposed to and making use of media/ICT for entertainment and informational purposes, for social networking and mobilization, and for knowledge sharing.
At the core of this creativity and these innovative practices is media and information literacy. Young people’s competence in using media, their ability to produce, understand and interact with the multiplicity of both new and old media formats and technologies have been instrumental in the manifestation of social processes of change. This book seeks to explore theoretical assumptions as well as empirical evidence of media and information literacy in action. But it also gathers examples of how youth in developing countries have used their skills to bring about change.
